All 52 cards are dealt face-up, so nothing is hidden and nothing is left to chance. Four free cells give you room to manoeuvre while you build the tableau down in alternating colours and send every suit up to the foundations. Virtually every deal can be solved with the right plan, which is why FreeCell is the thinking player's solitaire.
How to Play
Build tableau columns down in alternating colours (red on black, black on red). Any single card can be parked in one of the four free cells. Move longer runs by keeping free cells and empty columns available — the more you have free, the more cards you can move at once.
💡 Tips & Strategy
Because every card is face-up from the start, FreeCell rewards planning over luck — so plan the whole route before you touch a card. Work out where the low cards are buried and which columns you must dig through to reach the Aces you need first.
Your free cells are working memory, not storage. A card parked in a cell is a card doing nothing, and every occupied cell shrinks how many cards you can move at once — the limit is (free cells + 1) × (empty columns + 1). Fill all four and you can only move one card at a time, which is how most losable deals are actually lost.
Empty columns are worth more than free cells, because they multiply your move size rather than shrinking it. Opening one early, even at the cost of a few awkward moves, transforms the rest of the game. Resist refilling an empty column with a random card just because you can.
Don't rush every Ace and Two upward. Sending low cards to the foundations too early removes landing spots you may need for building runs. And use undo freely to test a line: seeing three moves ahead is the whole game here, and there's no hidden information to punish you for exploring.
