Pinochle

Marriages, pinochles and a run in trump. Meld big, win tricks, beat Pearl to 1000.

About Pinochle

The kitchen-table classic, played two-handed against Pearl. A 48-card double deck of 9s through Aces, twelve cards each, and the next card turned up sets trump — if it’s a 9 (the dix), the dealer bags 10 on the spot. While the stock lasts you can play anything you like, and every trick you win lets you lay down one meld before you draw. A marriage is 20, a royal marriage in trump 40, the Q♠ J♦ pinochle 40, four Aces around 100, the A-10-K-Q-J run in trump a fat 150, and double pinochle a whopping 300. Once the stock is gone the gloves come off: follow suit, beat the card if you can, trump if you can’t. Aces, 10s and Kings are worth 10 each in the tricks you take, the last trick adds 10, and the first to 1000 at the end of a hand wins. Pick Casual or Sharp Pearl.

How to Play

Phase 1 (stock left): play any card — no need to follow suit. Trump beats any other suit. Win a trick and you may lay one meld, then draw first. Phase 2 (stock gone): follow suit, beat the card if you can, else trump. Card order: A 10 K Q J 9. Aces, 10s and Kings score 10 each in tricks; last trick +10. Melds: marriage 20, royal marriage 40, pinochle 40, aces around 100, run in trump 150. First to 1000 at the end of a hand wins. Choose Casual or Sharp Pearl.

💡 Tips & Strategy

Count your meld before you count your tricks. While the stock lasts you can play anything, so feed Pearl your low cards — spare 9s and Jacks with no meld value — and hang on to Aces, 10s and Kings, which are worth 10 each in tricks, plus anything you need for melds. Win a trick when you have a meld to lay or when she leads a counter worth grabbing.

You can lay only one meld per trick won, so plan the order. A card can be reused in a meld of a different kind, so K♥ can sit in a marriage now and in kings around later. Meld the 9 of trump (the dix) early: it scores 10 and swaps for the face-up trump card while the stock lasts. When both Q♠s and both J♦s are in reach, double pinochle at 300 is worth holding out for.

Watch the stock run down. Once it's gone you must follow suit and beat the card if you can, so long trump and solid Aces take over. Melded cards stay face-up, so you can see exactly what Pearl still has to play — and the last trick is worth an extra 10.
