Skyscrapers

Build the city so every street view matches its clue.

About Skyscrapers

A city block seen from all four sides. Each cell holds a building from 1 to N storeys, one of every height in each row and column, and the numbers around the edge tell you how many buildings you would see standing there — a taller one hides everything shorter behind it. A clue of 1 means you are looking straight at the tallest building on the street. Part Latin square, part line of sight, and properly satisfying when the last view clicks.

How to Play

Place heights 1 to N so each row and column has every height exactly once. Edge numbers say how many buildings are visible looking in from that side. Taller buildings hide shorter ones behind them.

💡 Tips & Strategy

The edge clues at the extremes are free placements. A clue of 1 means the very first building is the tallest, so write N straight into that cell. A clue of N means you can see every building, which is only possible if the whole line climbs in order — 1, 2, 3 and up, away from the clue.

For everything in between, use the bound: the cell nearest a clue of c can be no taller than N-c+1. In a 5×5, a clue of 3 means the first cell is at most 3, the second at most 4, and so on one step at a time. Marking those ceilings along every clued line eliminates a huge number of candidates before you place anything.

A clue of 2 is worth its own habit: the tallest building cannot be first (that would show 1), so N sits somewhere further down the line, and whatever is first must be tall enough to hide everything between it and N.

After that, treat it as a Latin square and track where N can go in each row and column — the tallest building is what every clue is really talking about. Place the Ns, then the N-1s, and the views tend to confirm themselves.
