Go (Baduk)

Black stones, white stones, one board. Surround more than the computer.

About Go (Baduk)

The ancient strategy game with rules you can learn in a minute and depth nobody has ever run out of. Take turns placing stones on empty crossings; stones never move. Surround an enemy group so it has no empty points left beside it and it is captured. You cannot fill in your own last breathing space, and the ko rule stops endless back-and-forth captures. When neither side has anything useful left, both pass, you tap away any dead groups, and the board is counted: stones plus surrounded territory, with White getting 6.5 points for moving second. Play 9×9 or 13×13 on Easy, Normal or Hard.

How to Play

Tap an empty crossing to place a stone. Stones never move. A group with no empty neighbouring points is captured. No suicide moves, and no retaking a single stone straight back (ko). Pass when you are done — two passes end the game. Mark dead groups, then confirm. Score = your stones + empty points you surround. White gets 6.5 komi.

💡 Tips & Strategy

Corners first, then sides, then the centre. It takes far fewer stones to secure territory in a corner, where two edges help you, than in the open middle.

Keep your groups connected and give them room. A group needs two separate eyes — two enclosed empty points — to be safe forever. If a group looks short of space, make it an eye shape before you attack elsewhere.

Watch liberties. When an enemy group is down to one, capture it; when your own group is down to two, fix it now. And don't chase every stone — building your own territory usually beats a risky invasion. Start on 9×9 Easy to learn the shapes.
